| In the Asian
Civilisations Museum, the multi-armed Quan Am, a significant figure
in Buddhism.
| As you can tell from the plaque, this is an authentic magic book. It
certainly looks the part.
| Wooden masks from Malaysia.
| Information about the masks.

| Hey, it's another magic spell book!
| Information about the previous book. It doesn't have spells; rather, it
helps prophesy the future.
| Beautifully illuminated Korans / Qur'ans from the 16th-18th centuries.
| Shadow puppets from Java. I find the left one comic but the ones
on the right a little scary.
| Khmer masks. These are modern creations made in the traditional style.
| A elaborate dougong (a decorated element used near the roof of a
building).
I saw a cool display of Bugis (an ethnic group in Indonesia) weapons
(keris, a type of dagger) and buckles. Sadly, it was too dark to take a
picture in this gallery.

| The Victoria Theatre, built originally as Singapore's town hall.
| Another view of the Victoria Theatre.
| A close-up of the clock tower, actually taken earlier in the day with a
long zoom lens.
| The Supreme Court building.
| Next to the Supreme Court building is the similarly classically designed
City Hall, complete with numerous Corinthian columns.
| A pretty, ivy-covered tree.
| The view across the Padang toward the central business district, the
area I walked around this morning.

| Dinner at Kok Sen Coffee Shop
| My friend and his family brought me to dinner at Kok Sen Coffee Shop.
(It's actually a full-menu restaurant.)
| My friend and his wife.
| Their little baby.
| My friend and I.
| Beef chow fun. Delicious. I'm told it's different from the kind you get in China.
| Eggplant or peppers wrapped around shrimp. Decent.
| Roasted pork short ribs. Okay.
| Vegetables.

We also had barley water to drink. I must've liked it: I wrote in my
notes "very good." I don't remember this, and I'm surprised I was
willing to pay barley water such a compliment.

| Drinks in Holland Village
The lively college-town-like streets of Holland Village.
It's a good area for people watching.
| A panoramic movie of the main street in Holland Village. If you listen
to the sound, you can hear part of my friend's explanation about how
Holland Village came to be.
| Tango's, the bar where we decided to hang out for a bit.
| My drink: a Singapore sling. I figured I couldn't leave Singapore
without trying this eponymous drink. It was fine. I'm sure better
versions must exist.
